DevOps Guys: Giving Visibility into Operations for Customers
About DevOps Guys
DevOps Guys is a fast growing DevOps Consultancy headquartered in Cardiff, Wales, UK. They work with a range of clients ranging from UK Government clients such as the DVLA and Ministry of Justice, and a range of private industry clients such as FitnessFirst and ASOS.
DevOps Guys predominantly work with online web applications, on a whole host of technologies running on Windows and Linux infrastructure. In addition to providing DevOps consulting to help clients bring DevOps and Automation into their Organisation, they also provide Managed Operations on behalf of some of their customers.
DevOps Guy’s Monitoring Challenges
DevOps Guys are passionate about DevOps, and using monitoring to push real-time information out to all the stakeholders in an online service, from Developers, to QA, to Product Owners and the Business, so they can make better business decisions.
However, most traditional monitoring tools weren’t designed in a way that makes them easy to automate, easy to collect the metrics stakeholders care about, and most importantly, make it easy to share the information with stakeholders outside Operations.
Hence DevOps Guys needed a new monitoring solution that was designed for the world of DevOps, Cloud and Micro-Services, and allowed different stakeholders to get information from the solution in a self-service manner.
How Dataloop.IO Helped
DevOps Guys use Dataloop.IO for all of their core Infrastructure and Service monitoring for their Managed Operations customers.
Because of Dataloop.IO’s integration with popular Configuration Management tools like Puppet, Chef and Ansible, DevOps Guys can easily roll out Dataloop.IO in minutes using automation when setting up new customers. They can also Dataloop.IO’s APIs to automate monitoring during deployments.
In addition, the ease and speed of creating and deploying custom Nagios plugins in Dataloop.IO, enables their team to quickly get coverage across a customer’s infrastructure, and monitor the bespoke pieces of the application that out of the box monitoring plugins would never usually cover.
But most importantly, the ability to quickly and easily create Dashboards, that can be easily shared with their customers, has provided a unique level of visibility to clients, so that DevOps Guys can collaborate with customers using real-time data on how their service is actually performing, allowing the customers to make better business decisions.
Keeping Customers Secure with Dataloop.IO
One of the use cases DevOps Guys have used Dataloop.IO for, and shared in a blog (read here), is checking customer infrastructure for security vulnerabilities, and ensuring they’re patched.
For several security vulnerabilities, such as the Ghost SSL vulnerability on Linux recently, they write a quick Nagios plugin that is deployed to all the customer servers, and then setup a dashboard and alert to show them which servers require patching. They also share the Dashboard with the customer so they can see the progress of their patching in real time as the fix each server.
Not only does this ensure their customer’s infrastructure is secure, and stays secure afterwards by keeping the checks on all their servers, it also provides an unique level of visability with the customers, who can see the progress of their work in real time using the Dataloop.IO dashboards, building a better relationship with their clients.
- Save huge amounts of time not having to setup traditional monitoring solutions everytime they on-board a new client. They can simply deploy Dataloop.IO in an automated way using Ansible to roll out monitoring in minutes.
- Can provide greater visibility on the work they’re doing with their Clients through easy to configure and share Dashboards in Dataloop.IO.
- No longer have to worry about running and scaling a monitoring solution in addition to managing a customer’s application. Can spend more time focusing on adding value to the customer.
“The vision that Dataloop.IO has of making an easy to use, easy to configure, automated deployment, self-service solution is absolutely right. I think that Dataloop.IO is the DevOps monitoring tool of choice.”
